Premium survival horror

Escape the Backrooms is a paid puzzle game based on the internet phenomenon. This indie game from Fancy Games Studios leaves you in the middle of the Backrooms, popularized as an internet legend. In this game, you get to experience waking up with no recollection of how and why you’re there, only that you’re left to your own devices. Explore procedurally-generated levels that perfectly capture the endless and seemingly harmless dimension.

It perfectly captures the online urban legend, with smooth animation making the entire experience even more lifelike and immersive. It feels like Assessment Examination and Mandela Invasion combined.

Find your way and survive

The urban legend and online creepypasta that inspired Escape the Backrooms speak of an endless dimension filled with rooms that look like an average office space’s backroom. It is often described as having the smell of wet carpet, and the halls are draped in monochromatic yellow tones. Most of these things are perfectly captured in the game, inviting players into a false sense of security before unleashing its horrors.

In terms of visuals, it uses a mix of realistic and cartoonish visuals—both highlighting the horrors and the otherworldliness that made the Backrooms a persisting part of the internet. The rooms are incredibly lifelike yet certain physics such as debris and some monster designs are more on the abstract side. Additionally, its procedural generation of rooms and a large assortment of surprises guarantee a unique playthrough every time.

However, be warned about its potential for horror. It has some effective jumpscares. With the game being randomized every run, you’ll never know what to expect, especially since most monsters appear without warning—no audio cues, no visual signs beforehand, just pure monsters crashing through the walls or through the ceiling. The only other restriction of a game like this is its droning repetition throughout.

A nerve-wracking co-op experience

Co-op multiplayer is undeniably the standout feature of Escape the Backrooms. With a team consisting of up to four members, players are free to wander around the sprawling backrooms, clipping through areas and communicating their whereabouts via the game’s proximity voice chat system. While communication is key, it’s best to remain silent at certain times as the backroom monsters can hear conversations.

New maps to escape from

Since the release of Escape the Backrooms, Fancy Games Studios has released plenty of stages, such as Thalassophobia, Cave System, Level 3999, Terror Hotel, and many more.  Now, players will once again experience the terror of wandering and escaping the backrooms in the title’s nine never-before-seen maps, which include Dark Poolrooms, Hotel Chase, and Level 55.1.

In addition to addressing in-game bugs and issues surrounding the game’s voice chat, Fancy Games Studios has also adjusted the balancing in older levels and items. For example, items that increase your speed now have a longer duration — giving you a huge advantage in the backrooms. The developer will additionally work on improving the title’s replay value and other gameplay elements.

Your next virtual maze

By feeling like an average office backroom, yet filled with a lot of surprises and monstrosities, Escape the Backrooms is definitely a great horror game to have. Building on the widespread fame of the Backrooms creepypasta, it captures the essence of the online urban legend and lets players experience it firsthand. It may cause the visual strain from the all-yellow rooms and the surprises that come without warning, it’s still worth it.
